Why Compost?

Compost is a noun and a verb.

As a noun, compost is a soil “conditioner” that helps also provides fertility to plants. Using compost, whether homemade or store bought, recycles nutrients and organic materials that help plants grow with less water, fertilizer or pesticides. When applied to soil, compost can result in:

  • Better soil fertility: better root and plant growth
  • Increased organic matter and improved soil structure: increased resistance to erosion, runoff, and compaction
  • Increased disease resistance in plants: healthier plants are less vulnerable to pests and disease, in turn reducing pesticide use
  • Increased soil biological diversity and activity

As a verb, compost means organic recycling of biodegradable materials by a natural, low-tech process that is almost as old as the planet itself.
